Sony Ericsson T300 Review

Sony Ericsson Z600

Although marketed as Sony Ericsson’s most basic entry-level phone, the T300 debuted as a top of the line mobile, with many features unavailable on other so-called basic phones. The color screen and attachable digital camera were new for such a low priced phone, and many of its other functions were considered high end—in 2002.

Nowadays the phone seems very out of date. The display screen only has 256 colors—compare that with the K750i’s 262,000 colors—and the digital camera has many problems that make it seem very low end when compared to more recent technological advances in cellular phone technology.

The fact that the camera is not integrated into the device is one out of date aspect of the T300, but it is not the only one. The camera takes very murky pictures, and if the light is not very bright (sunlight preferably) the pictures will be too dark or almost too dark to make out.

When viewing your pics on the 256 color display, make sure that you are not in direct sunlight, as this phone does not contain the more recent TFT technology that allows a bright, vibrant screen in all types of light.

With only 1MB of memory, photo storage gets tight surprisingly quickly. Make sure that you empty your inbox and do not have too many games or polyphonic ringtones before taking a pic, or else the T300 may not have room for it.

That being said, the T300 still is a good little block phone for making and receiving calls, texting, and accessing your E-mail. The 5-way joystick (up, right, down, left, press in) is effective at manipulating the menu, and the keypad is somewhat awkward to maneuver but it does work. Predictive text is a nice touch as well, and was not available on this level of phone for some of Sony Ericsson’s competitors.

It’s hard not to try to dissuade people from buying this phone. In 2002 it was an impressive entry-level device, but today it does not compare to some of the inexpensive models being offered by Sony Ericsson and its rivals. If all you need is a phone for the most basic of functions, then the T300 should suit your needs, but if you are looking for anything in the way of features, you may be better off looking elsewhere.
