Although the Sony Ericsson T230 originally appeared as a highly functional mobile phone of the most basic class, recent technologies have made it appear woefully inadequate. At this point, this phone should only be purchased by those looking for just that: a phone. Not loaded with features to begin with, the ones that it has now appear frustratingly slow and difficult to use.
Case in point is the low pixel camera that comes with the phone and that can be plugged into the bottom of the device. The pictures that it takes are of a very low quality, and only when taken in perfect conditions are the pictures worth keeping. Mostly, the pics come out too dark, too grainy, and are generally unacceptable considering more recent advances in mobile phone/digital camera hybrids technologies.
The screen contains 4096 colors, which is not ideal, but is functional for most of the phones features—except for viewing the photos taken with the digital camera. At 101 X 80 pixels, it is not the smallest display on the market, but it is close.
The phone has the ability to play both polyphonic and mono ringtones, but at this point we come against one of the main faults of the phone—its memory is almost non-existent. A few games, a couple of ringtones, one or two photos and your memory is clogged. The phone is not as easily augmented with a Memory Stick DuoÔ as more recent Sony Ericsson models, and the price of updating this phone makes the purchase of a completely new one seem like an extremely good idea.
Basically, if you are looking for a phone that is just for making and receiving calls, then the T230 can certainly do the job. The screen is bright and colorful, and I’m sure that that was an attraction when it came out, but do not expect this phone to do much else for you.
I have received E-mails about the keypad buttons beginning to stick and the display screen losing luster over time, and although I haven’t personally experienced that with my T230, I would not doubt it.
A phone that is just a phone, the Sony Ericsson T230 is right for the savvy shopper who can find a good deal and is not concerned with owning a phone with high quality features.
