In order to get a grasp of where the Sony Ericsson P900 lies, it is a good idea to compare it to the phone that came before it, the P800, and the phone that has come after, the P910i. Although all these phones have extensive PDA functionality (including compatibility with Microsoft Office software), digital cameras, MP3 players, and many modes of data transfer, including BluetoothÔ, it is in the differences between the three that we can see the values of each.
The P900 has largely replaced the P800, which is a very similar phone without some of the P900’s features. For example, the P800 has just 4096 colors with TFT (visible in direct sunlight) technology, while the P900 boasts 65,536 colors—the same as some of Sony Ericsson’s K-series phones. Also, the P900 has a video recording feature, while the P800 only offers video playback. Other improvements include a lighter weight, smaller size, and predictive text.
The P910i, on the other hand, includes 64 MB of user available memory, as opposed to the P900’s 16 MB, and while the talk time and battery have remained the same, Sony Ericsson has included 262,000 colors on the P910i’s similarly sized screen. While the P900 has polyphonic ringtones, the P910i does it one better with MP3 ringtones, as well as polyphonic.
When all the chips are in, the P900 stacks up fairly well against its older brother. At this level of quality, the difference between 65K and 262K colors is difficult to see with the naked eye, the only valid reason to go with the P910i is the added memory, which can be a real bonus with a phone that contains this many features. So shop around, and if the added memory isn’t worth the extra money that you will be spending on the P910i, buy the P900 and a couple of Memory Stick DuosÔ, and you will have a highly functional, state of the art PDA/phone.
All in all, the P900 is one of the most inclusive and integrated PDA/phone currently on the market, and a good buy for businesspeople interested in combining work related organization functions with a media powerhouse featuring games, music, video, and pictures.
