Sony Ericsson P800 Review

Sony Ericsson Z600

The Sony Ericsson P800 is a mobile phone/PDA with an integrated camera and MP3 player. The phone’s main focus is on its PDA capabilities, and as such is comparable to the Nokia 7650, but the phone has all the features you would expect in a modern device of this class, and the digital camera—640 X 480 pixels—and integrated MP4 video player demonstrate that Sony Ericsson was committed to creating a PDA/phone with “everything” when they created the P800.

Memory is not a problem with the P800, as its internal 12 MB can be infinitely augmented with 16-and-up MB Memory Stick DuosÔ, giving the phone potentially limitless capabilities to store data.

Pictures taken with the camera can be sent over Bluetooth, E-mail, MMS, and a number of other outlets. With just 4096 colors on the ample display screen, your photos are not always as vivid as they would be on a more recent model, but they are usually enough to tell which to keep, and which to delete.

PDA qualities of the P800 include complete compliance with all sorts of programs, starting with recognition of Microsoft Office files, including Word and Excel. The organizer features are easy to manipulate with the phone’s stylus and its 5-way joy stick, and other features of the phone are also easy to maneuver, with several shortcuts taking you into different phone modes, including just a single click to enter the digital camera format.

One of the more unique elements of the P800 is a removable flip feature that allows you to use the phone as both a normal block mobile/PDA, and a flip. When the phone is closed, the back or bottom has the normal press-button number and character for you to make calls. When the flip is removed or open, the stylus can be used to do the same thing. The option is yours.

More recently, the P800 has largely been replaced by the P900, which is a very similar phone with some upgrades. For example, the P800 features 4096 colors with TFT (visible in direct sunlight) technology, while the P900 boasts 65,536 colors—the same as some of Sony Ericsson’s K-series phones. Also, the P900 has a video recording feature, while the P800 only offers video playback. Other improvements include a lighter weight, smaller size, and predictive text.
