The Samsung E700 is a very similar mobile phone to the Samsung E600, with a few crucial differences. Like the Samsung E600, this phone is lightweight and boasts surprising, enhanced camera features for its small size. Also like the E600, it has some nice features such as Java game and application support, is compatible with several types of ports, and leaves aside truly advanced features such as MP3 or MPEG support to focus instead on delivering better imaging capability.

Where these phones differ however, is with regard to some important features. The E700 utilizes dual-band operation as compared to the E600’s tri-band. Also, while the Samsung E700 does have some enhanced imaging features such as multi-shot and various photo effects, it does not have some of the camera features of the E600—such as self-timer.

Somewhat perplexingly, the E700 is compliant with a more current WAP version, but lacks an e-mail function, whereas the E600 offers users e-mail—but with an earlier WAP version.

The multi-shot function (also found on the E600) of the E700’s digital imaging device works by taking several photographs in rapid succession, producing a choppy imitation of a video. But yet another shortcoming of this phone when placed alongside the E600 is the lack of a true video function—something no amount of “photo effects” can adequately compensate for.

Perhaps the only areas where the Samsung E700 is superior to the E600 are in memory and design. The E700 comes with 9 MB worth of storage, which can hold hundreds of JPEG pictures—and beats out the E600, which only has 5 MB worth. And as far as design goes, for the E700, Samsung has gone internal with the antenna and given this mobile a sleek, sporty, cool blue design that is a marked improvement over the plain-Jane E600.

Unflattering comparisons aside, the E700 is a decent phone in its own right. It has the capability to send multi-media messages to other phones, including JPEGs and polyphonic sounds, and the access to WAP features such as downloadable Java programs and information services will appeal to many.
