Samsung is billing the E600 as one of the world’s smallest camera phones—and it certainly is compact. A light 84 grams and its modest dimensions will appeal to people who want a feature-packed phone they can fit in their pocket. Samsung offers two battery types—standard and slim. The standard type holds a longer charge, but the slim type takes off grams and centimeters from this already small phone. Besides the camera function, optimal communication plays a key role in the E600. This phone features tri-band operation and is WAP compliant, allowing users to send e-mails.

The imaging device offers fairly standard resolution for a camera phone. While dedicated cameras are climbing to 7.2 mega pixels, all but a few very high-end phones hover around the 0.3 mega pixel mark, which is what the Samsung E600 features.

The enhanced camera functions set it apart from other phones. The self-timer lets you put yourself in the picture—just like with an SLR. Also, the Samsung E600 is capable of recording short videos—or to save memory users can take advantage of the multi-shot function. When in multi-shot mode, the E600 will take a series of JPEG format photos in rapid succession, producing an effect similar to animation or a flipbook.

Stored JPEG photos can be used as a screen background, or can be put in a slideshow series as a screensaver. Also good fun is the Java game library. The Samsung E600 comes with four Java games pre-installed, and users can directly download more games to expand their library. This phone can support other Java applications as well. Those familiar with Java know that Java applications are often easy-to-use tools such as weights and measures converters or simple information retrieval programs.

Audiophiles, however, fare much worse. While the Samsung E600 does have appealing polyphonic ringtones, it offers nothing like the multimedia format support of other phones—so streaming Internet radio is also out of the question. But with excellent camera features and advanced communication options such as fax compatibility and e-mail functions this phone is the right choice for many consumers.
