Motorola C550 Review

Motorola V80

Motorola created an extremely popular model with their C350. Although basic, it was one of the first mobile phones to offer a bright color screen, sending the days of drab olive green user interfaces rocketing into the past. With the C450 Motorola improved on the basic features of the phone, while the C550 added a real change: the incorporation of a digital camera in the unit.

Like other block form mobiles, the C550 has its camera mounted on the back, near the top. They included a small mirror that allows you to take pictures of yourself with your friends, but they neglected to upgrade the display screen, which has to be one of the most frequent complaints about the C550.

With the same basic 4,096 color screen, pictures taken on the C550’s digital camera are incredibly difficult to make out. Because it is common practice to make photo book editing choices (such as deleting) directly on the phone, the fact that you have to first upload your pictures to your computer before you can see them is a big problem.

Frequent uploads would be necessary even if the screen was enormous and colorful, however, because of the phone’s extremely low available memory. Since the release of this phone, increases in memory size, screen size, amount of colors, and camera quality make the C550 seem like a phone without a functional camera, although if all you are interested in is adding small photos of your friends to your phonebook then this model should be fine for you.

The C550 isn’t all bad though. From Javaä games to polyphonic ringtones, the C550 continues the C-series trend of being highly customizable, fun, entry-level mobile phones.

Files can be sent using E-mail, SMS, or MMS. Bluetooth is not available with this model. The keypad is small and close together, making the buttons somewhat difficult to manipulate, but the 4-way directional keypad eases some of the burden on the main number buttons.

At 94 g. the phone is fairly lightweight, and its size is small enough to fit easily in your pocket. Light in terms of weight, but also in terms of features, the C550 should only be purchased by those looking for a basic, entry-level phone for calling and text messaging. The digital camera should not play a significant role for those deciding whether or not to purchase this phone.
