Interview with David Bozward of Blue Sphere Games

This is an interview with David of Blue Sphere Games. Blue Sphere Games like to concentrate on what they do best, which is creating java games for mobiles. So lets find out a little more about them:

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us David. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What is your background?

I started developing mobile services in 1995 for Orange, back then it was SMS and cut down HTML, later WML. This moved on to electronic wallets and video. I have worked for many operators around the world since then.

What do you see as the biggest turning point in recent mobile phone history?

We would be sitting in meetings in 1995 and SMS people around the table. Most people outside the industry did not know what SMS was, now everyone does, this general acceptable of SMS has to be the biggest turning point to mass market mobile value added services.

Can you tell us about the key stages in producing a game, from conception to distribution?

Here's the 30 second overview: Everyone at Blue Sphere Games has been playing games for a long time. At the beginning of the game development we sit down and discuss what type of game we are thinking about, the genre, once that is put down we discuss our likes and dislikes in this genre. This generates lots of ideas which could or could not work and we throw these about. Everyone gets a say, which means it takes time but we get to make good games that way. Once this is put down on paper we then go away and make a beta version and then everyone gets to play with that and comment again. After this it gets finished and is run through formal testing procedure.

Do you think the mobile gaming industry has a future and if so what direction would you like to see it take.?

Yes, it does. The industry is maturing but still has a long way to go. This is happening in two ways, handsets and the players within the industry. This main point is volumes are increasing and the industry will enter the main stream especially when 20 million people have Java enabled phones, which is more than PCs. Once this occurs then the players will get larger as the development and marketing tasks increase.an.

Do you get together with other mobile phone game developers. Is the community a tight one?

Yes, it is. There are many players but some have been around from the start and we see each other at every event, every customer.

If the sky was the limit what would Blue Sphere games perfect game involve?

You mean Blue Sphere talk about Blue Sky, eh! The phone will always be small, less processing power, smaller screen, less memory…..etc which means we have a niche in which millions of devices are sold each week across the globe which can play our games. As for the perfect game, I guess I will pass on that, as it would be less than perfect for many others.

What have you got in the pipeline?

Blue Sphere Games will release a series of new titles this year. These include Sport, Platform, Arcade and some old favourites. The next push is called "Golden Warrior" which is a six part game. The user has to download the six midlets to complete the game. Each game has a series of cheats to allow you to get to the end. In this six-part adventure, your task is to guide the Golden Warrior through dangerous underground caverns, water, forests, and even on the back of a flying dragon - all to save the Universe. Can you battle your way through this episode: Cavern Escape?

Episode 1: Cavern Escape
Lord Puce has attempted for centuries to take control of the universe, and now that his plan to lure and incarcerate the Golden Warrior, a powerful defender of goodness, has worked, the total reign of evil is closer than ever. He only needs to make it to the remote Fortress of Evil, and perform one last arcane, but vital, ritual.

The Golden Warrior wakes up in the caverns under Lord Puce's castle - he's been tricked! He realises that with him out of the way, Lord Puce's plans to control the universe will surely succeed. He must escape from these passages and find a way out - but he cannot go through the castle above - it is too heavily guarded.
